Their contribution to the story is more profound than providing the clothes for a production.
Film Costuming serves 2 equal purposes : 1st is to support the narrative by creating authentic characters ( people ) and 2nd is composition, to provide balance within the frame by using color, textures and silhouette.
I follow a process to achieve the above mentioned purposes.
The most important need of costume designing is to understand the vision of the director or the demand of the script .
Extending from the narration , its very important to understand the client / character . Understanding the character's history / culture / setup / demographics / social structure etc. also helps in building the understanding of the character.
A mood-board / color story gives an idea of the mood of the story / character.
The colors / silhouettes / textures / prints / patterns etc. are derived majorly from the mood-board.
An entire range of design sketches is made / referenced as per the character so as to get a clear picture of the characters.
On the basis of our understanding of the character and quantity of the costumes required , a budgeting is articulated .
The measurements of the character is taken to ensure the proper fit of the garment.
On the basis of the mood-boards and color story , the materials of the garments and the trims are sourced .
Once the material is sourced and locked , garments are made as per the measurements taken and the designs finalized.
Once the garment is ready , a look test or fittings is done so as to avoid any last minute confusion / alteration.
